10th Meeting between the General Secretariat of the Banking Commission and the Managing Directors of Credit Institutions and Financial Holding Companies of the WAMU
Mr. Jean-Claude Kassi BROU, Governor of the BCEAO and Chairman of the Banking Commission of the West African Monetary Union (WAMU), chaired on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the 10th edition of the meeting between the General Secretariat of the Banking Commission and the Managing Directors of WAMU credit institutions and financial holding companies, held via videoconference.
In his opening remarks, the Governor highlighted the enduring nature of this consultative platform, which provides a unique opportunity to discuss the achievements, outlook, and challenges of the banking sector, in order to identify levers for strengthening the soundness and resilience of the sub-regional financial sector.
The Governor called for particular attention to be paid to strengthening capital, ensuring the reliability of regulatory reporting, and promptly addressing identified deficiencies and implementing the Banking Commission's decisions. The Chairman of the Banking Commission also stressed the importance of compliance with regulatory requirements concerning the external financial relations of WAEMU Member States, as well as Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism, and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (AML/CFT/CPF).
The presentations and subsequent discussions focused primarily on (i) recent developments in the banking sector, (ii) the main expectations of the Supervisory Authority, (iii) the application of Regulation No. 06 on the external financial relations of WAEMU Member States, and (iv) the industry's perception of the regulatory framework and its developments. Awareness-raising messages were addressed to the profession regarding credit data sharing, the centralization of banking risks, and payment incidents. This meeting also provided an opportunity for the West African Committee for Banking and Financial Organization and Standardization (CONOBAFI) to present its activities to the entire banking profession.
